How do I know if my gutters should be cleaned?
If your gutters haven’t been consistently cleaned at least once a year, they need to be cleaned. Here are some other signs that your gutters may need to be cleaned:
- you see debris sticking up
- you notice little green seedlings growing in your gutters
- water isn’t coming out of the downspout at all or just trickles out when it rains
- water overflows the edge of the gutters when it rains
- when it rains hard you notice water in your basement
How often should my gutters be cleaned?
Here in Michigan, we recommend cleaning your gutters twice a year- June and early December. In the spring, gutters can get clogged with “helicopters,” other types of seed pods, and blossoms. It is best to clear these out so your gutters can perform their best during summer thunderstorms. Clean your gutters again right before the snow season begins. At this time they’ll be cleared of fallen leaves, twigs, and acorns. Having clean gutters at this time of year will allow for the snowmelt to drain properly throughout the winter, and can help prevent those nasty ice dams that can cause roof leaks and damage.

What happens when gutters become clogged?
Clogged gutters can cause a variety of problems. If the water isn’t draining properly you can get water leaking in along the base of your foundation and/or into your basement. Clogged gutters can also get too heavy and crack, come loose, or even fall down. In the winter, clogged gutters lead to ice dams, roof leaks, or even roof damage.
What causes clogged gutters?
The most common causes for clogged gutters include: fallen leaves, dropped pine needles, acorns, pine cones, seed pods, and helicopters. However, insects and animals such as bees, hornets, wasps, birds, squirrels, and chipmunks have all been known to build nests in gutters and downspouts causing clogs as well.
